ONLINE REGISTRATION SECURITY
There are several entities involved in the online registration for the ACKMIDS Conference.
University of Ballarat Your payment will be made to the University of Ballarat and this is the entity that will appear on your credit card statement.
SecurePay A provider of secure, real-time payments that the University of Ballarat has an arrangement with. You will be transferred to SecurePay's webpage when you are asked for your credit card details. This webpage is highly secured using 128 bit SSL encryption and because the payment is verified with the bank in real-time your credit card details are not stored on the SecurePay system for longer than the time required to verify the payment.
Centre for eCommerce and Communications CeCC is a business & research unit of the University of Ballarat and has been commissioned to develop the website for the ACKMIDS conference.
Ensuring that a website is secure. Whenever you are asked to enter credit card details or information of a sensitive nature you should always ensure that the webpage you are using has been secured using SSL. SSL ensures that information you send over the internet is secured. It does this in a number of ways. Firstly the information you send is encrypted using a highly random method which can only be decrypted by the intended recipient. The integrity of the data is also verified ensuring that it has not been tampered with en-route. How do I know that a website is secured using SSL? There are two main ways to ensure this. The address bar of your browser which contains the address of the page should begin with https:// instead of the normal http://. There should also be a padlock located in the status bar at the bottom of your browser which you can double click to read more about the security of the page in question. This information should also include a certificate which verifies who the owner of the website is.
SSL Certificates SSL certificates allow you to verify that the website you are using is actually who they claim to be. A valid certificate can only be gained through a complex process of verification by the organisation. Entities called Certificate Authorities manage the distribution of certificates and must be highly trusted. The two major certificate authorities are Verisign and Thawte. You can view the SSL certificate for a particular page by double clicking on the padlock in the bottom of your browser window or selecting page properties from the browser menu.
